Chappell of Bond Street is delighted to continue hosting the second full season of Lunchtime Conservatoire Concerts featuring some of the very best pianists from our London Conservatoires. The next recital is on Wednesday February 25th at 1pm where we feature Ching-Yun Hu from Taiwan, currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music. Ching-Yun plays a varied programme featuring virtuoso pianist-composers spanning a century of creativity.

Called 'dazzling', and 'a pianist with the soul of Chopin', Ching-Yun Hu captured the top prize at the 2008 Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in Tel Aviv, where she was also awarded the Audience Favourite Prize. Deeply impressed and equally moved by her artistry, prominent music critic Chanoch Ron wrote in the leading Israeli newspaper, Yediot Acharonot, 'This young woman brings with her the secret, the mystery, and the style. She has the suspense of Brendel, Perahia's lyricism and Barenboim's depth. Are we witnessing the birth of a new Martha Argerich?' At her home country and abroad, she has been given a title - Taiwan's Proud.
Following the victory at the competition, she was immediately engaged on short notice to step in for Helene Grimaud in Beethoven's 4th Piano Concerto with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, while giving a seven city recital tour in Israel. Her memorable performances of the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1 and Prokofiev Concerto Piano Concerto No. 3 with the same orchestra in the finale of the competition were broadcast live by international channel 'Mezzo' to 38 countries in the world. The success of this award brought her to new heights in the classical music world. Her 2008 -2009 concert season takes off with Rachmaninoff Concerto No. 2 and Prokofiev Concerto No. 3 with the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, Israel Symphony Orchestra and Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra. Recital tours will take her to Wigmore Hall, Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, Opera House in Tel Aviv, National Concert Hall of Taipei; at the Klavier-Festival Ruhr, Chopin Festival in Duszniki - Dzroj, Poland, Keyboard Festival in New York, Chipping Camden Festival in UK, Menton Musique Festival in France, Maputo Festival in Mozambique, and recital tours of UK, Israel, and Taiwan.
Future engagements also include recital at the Grand Hall of Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, with the Budapest Concert Orchestra, Malvern and Bournemouth concert series in UK, and a concert tour to South Africa. Ms. Hu made her solo debut at age 13 with the Poland Capella Cracoriensis Chamber Orchestra on tour in Japan and Taiwan, and won the Silver Medal at the Taipei International Piano Competition at age 16. In addition, she has appeared in a sold out concert with the Philadelphia Orchestra as the soloist in the Grieg Piano Concerto. She has also collaborated with the Aspen Concert Orchestra, New York Sinfonietta, Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, World Festival Orchestra, Grande Rapide Orchestra, and Viana do Castelo Festival Orchestra, among others. In previous seasons, Ms. Hu's concert appearances had taken her to such prestigious venues such as the Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York, Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Salle Cortot in Paris, Aspen Music Festival, Chopin International Festival in Poland, National Chiang Kai-Shek Performance Hall, Osaka Hall, and in various other concert halls in Spain, Portugal, Africa, UK and the US.
Her numerous other international competition accolades include several First Prizes: at the World Piano Competition in Cincinnati, Olga Koussevitzky International Piano Competition, Seiler International Piano Competition in New York, and the California International Piano Competition. Her performances have been aired by WQXR Robert Sherman Young Artists Showcase, WRTI Philadelphia Orchestra Broadcast Concert Series, the Polish National Radio and Television Stations, and numerous other radio stations worldwide.
In her native country of Taiwan, she was recognized with an honorary award from the Cultural Minister for her contribution in music, other awards also include career sponsorship from the National Culture and Education Committees, and from the National Concert Halls and the Chi-Mei Music and Art Foundation. Born in Taipei, Taiwan. Ms. Hu moved to the US at the age of 14 to continue her music studies at The Juilliard School in New York, studying piano performing with Herbert Stessin and Oxana Yablonskaya, chamber music with Timothy Eddy, Joseph Kalichstein, and Seymour Lipkin. In addition, she has worked in master classes with Leon Fleisher, Richard Goode, and Murray Perahia. Presently, she resides in London where she continues her work with Sergei Babayan and Christopher Elton.
