Chappell of Bond Street is delighted to begin our very first series of evening concerts featuring some of the very best musicians from our London conservatoires, playing chamber music -  "Chamber at Chappell".

The next recital is on Tuesday February 17th at 6.15pm where we feature the Cardoso Duo: Joas Cardoso (Violoncello) and Sam Liu (Piano).

Joas Cardoso

Joas Cardoso was born in Breves-Pa–Brazil in 1985. He initiated his musical studies at the age of eight in the Music Conservatoire Carlos Gomes with Peter Saraliev and later Aureo de Freitas. Joas has had Masterclasses with Maud Martin Tortelier and Bernard Greenhouse at the age of thirteen. Joas has been highly awarded in competitions, in 2000 he won second prize in the Paulio Bosisio Soloist Competition and at the IBEU Cello competition he was awarded a special prize as the most promising musician.

Joas has been studying with Richard Markson at Trinity College of Music since 2002 where he graduated in 2007, he now continues on the Masters course whilst developing his career as a soloist and a chamber musician

Sam Liu

Born in Taiwan in 1988, Sam Liu has lived with his family in British Columbia until he was accepted in Trinity College of Music and moved to London as international student at 2007. He began piano studies at age 12 with Grace Schmuecker and subsequently with Dietmar Schmuecker.  Sam earned his ARCT diploma in Canada. Sam is now in his second year of the BMus course at Trinity College of Music where he studies with Douglas Finch.

On 14 April, Sam had participated the Ronald Stevenson at 80 event and performed at St. John's Smith Square. Later the night, he also stepped in to play the Ronald Stevenson Piano Concerto No.1 on a day's notice. He had previously won the audition of a performance of Ronald Stevenson's Piano Concerto No.1, and subsequently played with TCM Orchestra in November 2007 at Blackheath Hall with the presence of the composer. Having won the second prize at Michael E. Corby transcription competition, Sam subsequently performed in the Liszt Day event and participated in a masterclass held by Leslie Howard. Afterward, he was being invited to play at the Reform's Club in January 2008 as the youngest pianist and first pianist to give two piano recitals.

On June 24, 2007, he held his debut solo recital at Delta Firehall Centre for the Arts in Vancouver. He participates in a piano trio, Le Trio Chinois, whom performed at Musicfest Canada, and received Gold Medal for their accomplishment. Sam had collaborated with various instrumentalists for recitals; in the past few months and had performed in provincial towns such as Brighton, Hawick,Lewes, and Cheltenham.

This performance is free of charge and will take place in the Recital Room of Yamaha Artist Services Europe (London), situated within the historic Piano Hall at Chappell of Bond Street’s West End store.  The recital will commence at 6.15pm.
